Comfort in a Bowl: Homemade Wonton Soup Recipe
When the days grow colder or your soul craves a little comfort, few dishes hit the spot like a warm bowl of wonton soup. This beloved Chinese classic brings together delicate dumplings filled with savory meat, gently simmered in a clear, flavorful broth. Whether served as an appetizer or a light meal, it’s a heartwarming dish that speaks of home, tradition, and love in every spoonful.
A Taste of Tradition
Wonton soup is a staple in many Chinese households, particularly in the southern regions of China. The word “wonton” loosely translates to “swallowing clouds,” an apt description of these light, silky dumplings as they float in steaming broth. The beauty of wonton soup lies in its simplicity: a good filling, a clear broth, and just the right seasoning.
Making wontons from scratch might sound intimidating, but it’s easier than it seems—and the result is far superior to anything you’ll find in a takeout box.
Wonton Soup Recipe
Ingredients
For the Wontons:
1/2 lb ground pork (or a mix of pork and shrimp)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
1 garlic clove, minced
1 green onion, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon white pepper (or black pepper)
1 egg (optional, for binding)
25–30 wonton wrappers
For the Broth:
4 cups chicken broth (low-sodium preferred)
2 cups water
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2–3 slices fresh ginger
1 green onion, sliced
Salt to taste
Baby bok choy or spinach (optional)
Garnish:
Chopped green onions
A few drops of chili oil (optional)
Instructions
1. Make the Wonton Filling
In a mixing bowl, combine ground pork, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, green onion, pepper, and egg if using. Mix thoroughly until the filling is sticky and well combined.
2. Assemble the Wontons
Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of filling into the center. Dip your finger in water and moisten the edges. Fold the wrapper into a triangle, pressing out any air and sealing the edges tightly. Bring the two corners together and pinch to seal. Repeat until all wrappers are used.
